The upper peninsula fly fishing and weather is a changing as we head toward fall. Our Michigan trout streams get really big after a summer rain. After recent rains the Escanaba River tripled in size to 2400 CFM and water temps plummeted from 70's to 50's. This is a big but good change for the fish. With this flow they can spread out more, making the fly fishing a lot more difficult. The ticket seems to be getting down deep with heavy nymphs and trying to find the slower holding water (a challenge because at this high flow the water looks featureless.) Had a fantastic trip yesterday with a great group of guys from Indiana, Chicago and Charlotte. They picked up the nymphing game really quickly and managed a nice fat 20" brown that had some spectacular color.
