Fishing Report - Early spring steelhead fishing in the UP is warming up

Fishing the deeper, slower holes is key

· Fishing Reports

Just as the spring thaw starts, just as things start picking wham COVID 19 strikes! Well needless to say any and all guided trips are off until further notice as our Government in an effort to slow the roll of the virus has issued the stay at home order.

With that being said the last several outings have produced some nice fish for myself all of which came on swing with the hot patterns being sculpin style flies all swung on heavy heads to get the fly down tight to the bottom. The guys nymphing using egg, stonefly, hex and caddis nymphs have been producing some nice fish as well.

The small rivers have mostly all opened up in the south central upper peninsula with are larger rivers still being frozen but with the rain and warmer than avg temps I anticipate them (lrgr rivers) opening up within a week or so.

For those looking to book a trip this coming season which isnt far off Im going to add a twilight trip for both trout and smallmouth. Its going to be designed for somebody who just wants to get out and fish quick a no frills get in the water and fish style thing for 3/4 hrs. I started doing this last year and it took quite well. All the trout trips of this nature will be wading and all the smallmouth trips will be floats.

Until next time stay safe wash your hands and stay healthy!
God bless
